Welcome to my blog

This is my personal blog recording our experiences of ownership on Fallbarrow Park.  I hope you enjoy reading my aimless meanderings as much as I enjoy writing them.

Reflections on the season so far

We are now almost two months into the new season at Fallbarrow Lodge.  My apologies for not writing much over the recent months, but just before the season started, my wife and I became Grandparents for the first time to a beautiful baby girl.  As you can imagine, such an event has consumed much of our time and attention and writing blogs has taken a backseat in terms of priorities.

Just to compound things, we also refurbished the interior of the lodge during the close season so we had to juggle our free time between supervising the work and supporting our pregnant daughter.  The refurbishment work was 90% finished before the start of the new season and we managed to get everything clean and tidy before the arrival of our first guests of the season.  The final bits and pieces have been completed during changeovers (just a 4 hour window) and during our own two week break at the lodge over Easter.  We have now ordered the curtains and blinds for the lodge to make everything complete and finished by Whit Week when we have the use of the lodge once again for ourselves.

Bookings for 2012 have been nothing short of amazing.  We are now fully booked up until the end of October with just three weeks in November and two weeks in December left.  I am under no illusions that the location of our lodge is a major factor in its popularity. But with new decking installed last year and now the internal refurbishment we hope the lodge itself will also be a major attraction.  Once the new curtains are fitted I will be taking some photos and posting them on the website and Facebook.

In the summer we will be taking bookings for 2013 and if you want to be included on the mailing list then just email me at kevin@lodgeonwindermere.co.uk.  We do not plan any major work on the lodge for 2013 but we will continue to improve both the interior and exterior to ensure our guests enjoy what we believe is the best accommodation on Windermere.

I will also be updating the websites in readiness for taking bookings for the 2013 season including an on line booking facility.  I know it may seem strange discussing the 2013 season just 2 months into the current one but time passes so quickly.

Here is to a great 2012 season and let us all hope for fine weather.

Posterous and Twitter

Just read that Posterous has been acquired by Twitter. Will be interesting to see how this will impact on the cross social platform posting that is such a strong point for Posterous.

End of season

Well another season has come to a conclusion. It is always quite sad to close the lodge down for the winter as it seems so final. This year it was different as we had to clear the lodge in preparation for the major refurbishment work we are having done. I won’t go into too much detail but it promises to be another “wow” factor for the lodge. By the time it is finished we will have spent over £20,000 on a total refurbishment inside and out. Hopefully the guests who have booked for 2012 will appreciate the investment.

Just checking to see if posting works from the I Phone.

Memorable day

Today has been quite a memorable day, in a reserved quiet kind of way. I have now finished creating my first commercial website and it has gone live on the World Wide Web. Many thanks to Julie and John Dickens for having faith in me to create a website for their holiday lodge rental business.

Please take the time to visit the website and have a mooch around – http://dickenslodge.co.uk

For those of you who may be technically interested the site was built using WordPress plus a lot of blood, sweat and tears combined with trial and error.

If you are interested in getting a website then please do not hesitate to contact me at kevin@lodgeonwindermere.co.uk.

Test post

Just testing to see if my WordPress blog connects with Facebook

Has Stevey B bought a verb

It has long been acknowledged that the best test of brand recognition is when your brand becomes a verb. The classic example of this is of course Hoover. A brand and verb that survives to this day.

Another examples is Google which must annoy Steve Ballmer at Microsoft no end because we all keep Googling and not Binging.

So that may be one of the reasons Stevey B paid out billions of dollars to buy Skype. Lots of people suddenly seem to be skyping – even me. Just used Skype to make extremely cheap calls to the uk on my android phone over WI FI from Barbados. The quality was ok but the charge is about a penny a minute – bargain.

It could be that Stevey B has made a smart move. After all Apple does not have a verb.

Post once – update many

There is a lot of internet noise at the moment regarding the new changes coming down the track from Mark Zuckerbergs devil child – Facebook.  I have no idea at all if these changes are going to be for the better or worse.  Iam unlikely to find out if they are chages for the better as I am still trying to understand the current version.  If I don’t understand the current version, what chance will I have of understanding all the new Zucky gizmos?

There is a new social media kid on the block and it is not Google Plus.  Well technically speaking Google Plus is a new kid on the block but there is an even newer one – Posterous.  I am writing this blog update using Posterous.  With a little bit of luck it will appear as by magic on my Posterous space (http://kevinpwalsh.posterous.com/), but even more magically, it should appear on three Twitter feeds, two Facebook profiles and a Facebook page, my Linkedin profile and two WordPress blogs.  So post once – update many is really quite easy.

What makes Posterous even more useful is that you can post via e-mail, or via a dedicated client on I Phone and Android or just by using a browser.

Howver, the real attraction of me of Posterous is the ease of setup and use.  I hear a lot of people say all they use Facebook for is posting and reading status updates abd that FB is way too complicated for just that.  Well if that is something you agree with, then mosey over to www.posterous.com and check it out, you may well be surpised.

Dear Mark

Dear Mark

I bet you thought I had gone away as it has been a while since I last wrote to you. Well I have been rather busy recently with this and that and to be honest, your Facebook devil child is not an essential part of my life.

Which kind of brings me to the point of this letter. You see I have been keeping a distant watch on the “improvements” to Facebook you have announced recently. To be honest, I don’t really understand most of the stuff you have recently announced mainly because I really don’t understand must of the current Facebook features. As you know, I seem to have a habit of breaking some rule or another in the way I try to use Facebook leading to you banning me from adding new friends on more than one occasion.

So if I don’t understand what Facebook is all about now, and what it will be all about soon, why am I writing you yet another letter which you will no doubt ignore. Well, there are several people who are far more knowledgable than me who seem to believe your new Facebook wants to take over their lives. This article, for example, to be honest really concerns me.

Now I have seen some nice YouTube video of Timeline for example, and it does look quite cool. But what worries me and others is what you propose to do with all the lifetime information about me and all your other users. Some are suggesting you will use the data to sell targeted advertising. Surely not Mark, I am sure you would not stoop so low (by the way, Mark, as you are American you probably did not recognise the sarcasm in that last sentence).

So what now then Mark? Well as far as I am concerned I will just use your Facebook devil child to try and promote the rental of my lodge. But as far as chronicling my whole life so you can sell advertising for products I don’t want – just forget it.

Until the next time then Mark

Langdale Chase Hotel

Langdale_chase

The above photo was taken on July 23rd 2010 at about 7-00 am in the morning in the grounds of the Langdale Chase Hotel on shore of Windermere.  It was the day of our daughters wedding and the weather was glorious.

Our daughter chose the Langdale Chase as the location for her wedding before it was made famous by being featured on the TV programme “The Lakes”.  All the staff featured in the show were around on the day including the Admiral who made sure everything went smoothly without a hitch.

So if you are looking for a magical venue for your special day, the Langdale Chase certainly fits the bill.
